in Your Baby's Room

For most couples, decorating their new baby’s nursery is an exciting time. Whether they are aware of their child’s gender or not, choosing the perfect decorations, paint colors and furniture can be a lot of fun and a great way to celebrate a new baby’s arrival. When expecting a baby girl, nothing is quite as much fun as picking out and coordinating baby girl bedding.

Although baby girl nursery bedding has changed in recent years, many of the same themes, colors and textures are available. There are plenty of crib sets depicting princesses and fairies all colored in light shades of pink and purple with ribbon trim and eyelet lace. However, it is important when designing a baby’s room to introduce some individuality by thinking outside the box and channeling some inner creativity. If you and your family are trying to design a unique, comfortable and fun nursery here are some ideas to inspire your baby girl bedding sets and choices.

Girl colors? Boy colors?

One of the biggest issues that new parents have when choosing baby room décor is the old myth that some colors are for boys and other colors are for girls, i.e. that baby boy bedding has to be blue. This is an old way of thinking and you may miss many great décor ideas by dismissing elements as gender specific. There are plenty of colors other than pink that can be associated with little ladies. For example, when choosing bedding for baby girls, consider sets which include colors such as robin’s egg blue and soft mint green, you may find you have a lot more options when products are viewed as “childish” rather than “boyish” or “girly”.

Leave the department store

Whether you sew yourself, or hire a seamstress, having your bedding custom made can be both fun and affordable. By leaving the baby department stores behind and venturing into fabric retailers, you multiply your choices of colors, fabrics and patterns by the hundreds. Many fabric retailers will carry a wide variety of baby themed fabric, any of which can be purchased and used to make a one of a kind crib ensemble or a baby girl bedding set. Many people may think that having bedding made is expensive but the truth is, crib set patterns are fairly straight forward with all square lines and simple stitching making them incredibly affordable even when made by a seamstress.

Mix and Match

Mixing fabrics and textures is a hot new trend in home décor, and it can be incorporated into baby’s rooms without any difficulty. When purchasing your baby girl bedding try to find individual pieces that are complimentary to each other but not necessarily sold as a packaged set. For example, if you find a crib quilt which is just perfect with a light pink polka dot pattern, consider passing on the matching sheets and instead buy a fitted sheet set which is checkered or stripped. By mixing and matching patterns and fabrics your baby girl crib bedding will become more exciting and is sure to have punch and personality.
